Raja Harish Chandra Movie (1913)
Last Sunday, I went to see the picture “Raja Harish Chandra” at the Sant Theatre. Two of my friends also went with me. The show was to begin at 6-00 p.m. We reached their half an hour earlier. There was a great rush.
We spent some time in looking at the photographs of film stars that were on display in the show cases. They were really very beautiful. We then bought three first class tickets and went in. We occupied comfortable seats.
The hall was large and airy. It was well-lighted and tastefully decorated. Electric fans were working. There was a great noise and rush in the third class enclosure. But the first and second class enclosures were almost empty.
At exact 6-00 p.m. the bell rang. The lights were switched off and there was darkness in the hall. To begin with, some advertisements were displayed on the screen. Then news-reels and trailers were shown. They were followed by the cast of the film. After this, began the actual show.
The story revolved round Raja Harish Chandra, the ruler of Ayodhya. He was a very truthful and honest ruler. He never went back on his word. To keep his word, he had to give up his kingdom and suffer many hardships. The scene of his separation from his wife Taramati and only son Rohtas was very pathetic. His hard lot filled our hearts with sadness. In the end, however, they were all re-united and Harish Chandra got back his kingdom.
The picture was full of beautiful scenes and lilting songs. People remained glued to their seats. The acting of Prithvi Raj Kapoor who played the role of Raja Harish Chandra was superb. It won great applause. Some of the scenes were very thrilling and exciting. We enjoyed the show very much. The story was both instructive and inspiring.
The show came to an end at 9 p.m. We came out, hired a tonga and went home. For many days, those lovely scenes floated before my eyes.
