The people of India have many superstitions. Superstition is a baseless belief with a religious background.
Ignorant and illiterate people, living in the remote village, are usually afraid of everything unfamiliar to them. Superstitions grow out of their fear. With the progress of education and science, superstitions are slowly dying out. There are, however, some superstitions which have come down to us from days long gone by. It is very difficult even for highly educated and cultured people to break those superstitions.
Most of the superstitious beliefs are harmless. But there are a few which are likely to cause a lot of harm. Superstition influences the mind to a great extent and hinders the progress of a nation.
