Saraswati Puja

The Saraswati Puja is held in the month of Magh. Saraswati is the Goddess of learning and knowledge. Therefore, this is the festival of the students. That is why at schools, colleges, and other institutions and almost in every house this puja is performed.

The Hindu Goddess Saraswati sits on a white padma (lotus) holding a Veena in one hand and a book on the other. She is dressed completely white. She brings with her a bearer, white duck.

The student, girls and boys gather at school and colleges early in the morning having finished bathe and dressing them well in saris and dhotis. The pandel is decorated with coloured light, papers and flowers. Books, pens and inkpots are kept in front of the image on one platform. The enthusiasm and attraction for the Saraswati puja appear in the minds of the students. They offer flowers with folded hands as a mark of their respect. After the puja, distribution of Prasad is done among all. In the evening many cultural functions are performed. The night passes in great pomp and show. The emersion takes place on the next day. After emersion, all students come back with a sad and gloomy heart. This is the greatest puja of the young students.
