Red Fort

Red Fort, or natively known as Lal Qila, is one of the most prominent tourist attraction sites in Old Delhi, India. The Fort was constructed in 1638 by the fifth Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan who purposed it to be the palace Shahjahanabad, which was his fortified capital. With its alluring architecture and important history, more and more numbers of visitors go to explore the site every day.

History & Facts about the Red Fort

  • Red Fort was originally white. According to an Archaeological Survey of India, during the time of the Fort’s construction, most of the parts of the building were limestone made. The white stone began to chip off during the British Era, and the paint is red.
  • The fort gets its name from the boundary walls. The walls are high and huge for security purposes for the royals who were living in it.
  • The architects behind the design of the fort were Ustad Ahmad Lahori.
  • It has two main gates namely the Delhi Gate and the Lahore Gate. The latter is the main entrance of the Fort and its name is due to its orientation towards Lahore.
  • The Red Fort is octagonal from an aerial view.
