How Overpopulation Causes Poverty? – Essay

Right from the inception of mankind, there has always been a desire for men to work and multiple. However, there comes a time when it becomes too much. This is often referred to as overpopulation. This is a situation where the amount of people living in a particular area exceeds the number of resources which is available in that area. This is usually a bad thing and efforts by many countries to avoid this is being affected. There are a lot of reasons why overpopulation if left unchecked, would most likely lead to poverty.

Reasons why overpopulation leads to poverty

Some of the reasons include;

• Overpopulation affects the resources which are available in a bad way. This ensures that the resources and food available is in a smaller quantity. What this means is that the prices of foods would be hiked which may not usually equate to a rise in the standard of living. This would thus lead to people spending much more than they bargained for and thus reducing the amount of money they would have for other things. This is the main reason for the poverty rise in most countries. You would notice that these countries are usually overpopulation
• Overpopulation would also lead to unemployment issues. There are a limited number of jobs which can be realistically created in a country at a particular period of time. Overpopulation would mean that they would a lot of people who are probably skilled at a particular thing battling for positions that are very few in number. The end result is usually unemployment issues for a vast majority of people.
• Social amenities and education would no longer be readily available. It is usually recommended for everyone to attain the basic education which would be necessary for this life. This would be hard to achieve with unemployment. The government would find it really difficult to accommodate a lot of people and train every single one especially if the government does have the right amount of money coming in from the different revenue attractions in the country. When people remain uneducated and have no social amenities with them, the likelihood of them becoming poor is increased manyfolds. This would no doubt cause more poverty in the country.
• The growth of the nation would be slower with overpopulation. Nations which are overpopulated would experience slow growth in terms of infrastructural development. This would mean that those countries would simply not have the revenue to come with the ever growing population. This will, in turn, lead to the suspension of all plans to improve the infrastructure of the country in order to cope comprehensively with the growing need of the country. This would, in turn, lead to a lack of housing for persons. The prices of houses would go up and people would have to pay through their noses just to get decent accommodation.

CONCLUSION

Overpopulation is no doubt one of the greatest problems we have in our world today. Therefore, the importance of eradicating it cannot be overemphasized. If overpopulation is dealt with properly and efficiently, we would definitely see changes in the way our economic and political system would perform on a daily basis. We just have to work harder.
